Save on Auto Insurance for Teens

Having a teenager with a new driver’s license can be a scary time for parents. The day the auto insurance bill comes in the mail can also be frightening. It’s a fact that young, inexperienced drivers are at a higher risk for accidents, which means they cost more to insure. While insurance premiums will undoubtedly go up when you add a teen to your auto policy, there are ways to save some money.

1. Have your teenager take an additional driver safety course. Many of these courses can be taken online, and will not only give your child additional knowledge, but can also reduce premiums considerably.

2. Stress the importance of earning good grades. Many insurance companies give a good student discount for teenagers who have a high grade point average in school.

3. Raise your deductible. If you have some savings, then you may want to review your deductibles. A higher deductible means you will need to contribute more in the event of an accident, but it will lower your premium payment every month.

4. Buy a modest car. If you’re shopping for a car, don’t splurge on anything fancy. Your basic car equipped with safety features will cost less to insure than something sporty or high-performance.

5. If you have an older vehicle, consider dropping collision coverage. If the vehicle isn’t worth much, you might be paying for something that isn’t going to help even if the car is totaled. You may save up to 30 percent by dropping it.

Parents know teenagers are expensive. Even before they start driving, the family food and clothing budgets have a hard time keeping up. But the time comes when these young adults want to be able to drive themselves, and quite honestly, it makes parents’ lives easier when they do so. Auto insurance rates are bound to rise, but you can still cut costs by utilizing the tips listed above.
